"I was diagnosed as having a hiatal hernia over 25 years ago and it has been torture most of my life!! I often land in the ER with weird an vague episodes that no one seems to be able to correct! I often have the popping spasm you speak of makes my heart feel like it skips a beat. The cardiologist said I have a benign arrhythmia but never correlated it to my hernia?!! I often tell the doctors that I just don't feel right like I can't expand my diaphragm. I have also been told I have panic attacks and anxiety but I often don't feel stressed or worried. It all makes sense I often feel this feeling when I have eaten poorly or eaten a very large meal.
I have so many of the symptoms you speak of.... Even the tmj and sinuses I have suffered all my life! Been to countless doctors... I have sore throats that no one can explain I even went to Ent because I was loosing my voice! He said my vocal cords are thinning and he believes it's from my acid hitting my throat! As we speak I had a horrible headache for 2 days and jaw pain like something is pushing everything up and it pops in my head. But doctors look at you like you have 3 heads or you are crazy!! But thank you thank you!!! You are the first person to nail it!! Not crazy am sick and no one takes me seriously!! My pregnancies were horrible felt like I was dying each time and lost 2 boys back to back at 20 weeks and 18 weeks with no explanation. But makes sense my body is acidic overweight hypogicimic when I don't eat :(. Am sick of being sick!!! Please can you help me?? Can you recommend a chiropractor that can manipulate and get me back to health"

"I have been diagnosed with a hiatus hernia but have had lots of problems with palpitations recently, i also sometimes get a cold shivery feeling some nights as if i am going down with flu, i have suffered from really bad acidity over the last 10 years, i have had three endoscopy's and it was on the last one that i was diagnosed with a hernia, i also get bad chest pain along the sternum and a bad pain where my ribs meet in the middle, it's so depressing, does anybody else suffer from palpitations etc?"

"OMG!!!! Finally I've found someone who has the exact symptoms I am suffering from within this Hiatal Hernia!!! Sometimes severe palpitations to the point of feeling like passing out!!! Very scary!!! Doctors seem to have this "ho-hum" attitude about it and think that it's due to anxiety! Bull crap!! My friend who researches everything told me to juice 16 oz. of carrot/spinach juice daily and at another time during the day (closer to evening) drink 16 oz. of carrot juice straight. Believe it or not and much to my surprise these juices stop the palpitations almost immediately! I was desperate so I was willing to try anything to stop these God awful palpitations. I have not suffered from acid reflux or any of the other symptoms that go along with this HH because I eat small meals throughout the day. I avoid all foods that would cause any kind of flare ups!! I'm thinking that I want to look into the surgical procedure to close up the opening of this HH. Anybody actually have the surgery??"
"Everything that you have stated is true in my case. My eating now is only to survive. No fun eating fun foods anymore. I eat very small meals throughout the day and I am skinny as a rail although it has helped me a great deal. Hooooo hummmm....
I guess we have to deal with this thing as the new norm.... We need a cure for this demon!!!!!!!!"

"I was recently diagnosed with a small hernia and 2 small ulcers. Can someone please put my mind at ease about these heavy heart beats. my heart doesnt beat quickly, it just beats hard and i can feel it in my chest when just sitting down. sometimes i feel it pulse in my neck, arm or ear. and sometimes this heavy heart beat seems to efect my breathing. while breathin in and out every heart beat seems to pause the breathing. other symptoms i am not sure about are fatigue, weakness, headaches."

"Hi all, I've been following this discussion for a while and feel it's time to add my experiences. I'm 61 and had a sliding HH since I was about 20 with no real probems apart from from heartburn and reflux at night which I managed by copious amounts of bi-carbonate of soda and raising the head of the bed by 5inches.
In Jan last year I had an endoscope and it was confirmed (again) that I have a small sliding HH and a small section of Barratts. In the months following this endoscope I developed high BP, bloating, cramps, palpitations, light-headedness, difficulty breathing, tightness on the left side of my head/face and a few other things. I too get palps if I bend forward or stand up quickly.
My partner and I set about researching these things and everything pointed to Vagus nerve irritation, BUT - don't suggest this to any consultants because they think you're a stupid internet melodramatic (I know, I was called this in a letter to my GP) and then refused an appt because (I had already pre-diagnosed myself without sufficient knowledge of a condition that is impossible!) Research for yourselves the problems a HH and Vagus nerve combination can cause and you will be amazed at all the symptoms and similarities! I felt that there was pressure on the back/left side of my heart and was told that this was absolute nonsense by an upper GI surgeon, then an ultra-sound clinician told me that she'd actually seen - on numerous occasions - pressure on the heart from a sliding HH! 2 heart specialists have actually admitted the possibility of this happening recently, but I still can't get a gastroenterologist to investigate it, they all seem to want to treat the symptoms not the problem! So go do your research (avoid the websites that want to sell you a cure, go for the medical websites) and have a shock at how common this really is!
So what did I do? I set about the long task of finding everything that sparked off any problems, these are some of them : lemon, garlic, olives, lime, refined sugars give me day-long palps the next day! Pastries of any type, sweets (sugar again) green tea and so on. You must avoid refined sugar at all costs! I now have 2 juices or smoothies (containing 75% vegetables 35% fruit) and 2 small meals a day. Next you need to strengthen your stomach muscles, try doing pelvic thrusts and diaphram exercises - it really does help!
A last thought - you will also find that walking, talking and sitting upright will cause you problems, lying on your stomach or right side will alleviate this. Hope this is of some help, if anyone finds a specialist willing to investigate please reccommend them! The 10 minutes that the NHS gives them is not adequate for us."

"I have experienced the palpitations before my surgery 6 weeks ago.  I had the same chest pains for about 30 years having gone to many different doctors, They diagnosed me with acid reflux, and gave so many different PPI to take.  The attacks mimic a heart attack which they did.  It started out maybe a couple bouts a year.  Then I learned what the trigger foods were, red sauce, gravy of any kind..  I stayed away from all that for 30 years, then the last year was dreadful I couldn't even take cough medicine for a cold, antibiotic for sinus infec.
I would get the raging chest pains to the point of I would not know if it were a heart attack. At the time the gastro Dr. that I no longer see gave me nitro if the pains started.  I did only once take it because the pains in my chest continued all day.  Upon taking it I nearly blacked out. The pain left me but it was terrible.  Now I search for another gastro dr. this dr. recommended after trying more meds. about 6 mos later said have a Ph Probe test and motility study.  That was the saving grace where they finally found what was wrong.  It was the Sphincter was weak in the esophogaes and I had 60% acid in my stomach going into the hiatal hernia which the precious dr said was a sliding hiatal.  Total opposite it was the other way and rather large.  Therefore all the acid was pouring into my chest.
I thank God for this new doctor and his expertise.  He repaired the hernia, cleaned scar tissue in my gall bladder surgery from years ago. and did the Nissen Fundoplication.  Why gastro doctors dont order the ph probe and motility studies when people complain of these pains for years is beyond me.  Instead they keep ordering meds.  The surgeon I have said the same thing to me and said nobody should be on any PPIs for extended periods of time.  I am proof of it all....so folks demand they do testing rather than make u suffer as I did for so many years. Now I am 6 weeks post op and recovering well it is a slow process but its better ever week.  I will never as the dr said take any ant acids again....."

"A few years ago after an Endoscopy I was diagnosed with a small sliding Hiatus Hernia which I have treated with Omeprezole. Recently I have been encountering some breathing difficulties combined with a staggering amount of reflux and despite doubling to 40mg of Omeprezole the reflux and breathing problems continue. I have just had a further Endoscopy which revealed the same Hiatus Hernia and lots of reflux.
I am fairly certain that the Hiatus Hernia/Reflux is responsible for my Breathing problems, but doctors seem to disagree although they can not tell me what is causing it. I have seen a few similar postings to mine, can not sleep, wake up all sweaty, panicy, can not breathe, but no where can I see where a resolution was arrived at? So, could the breathing problems be down to the Hiatus Hernia and if so how was the problem resolved. Grateful for any advice. Regards Guy Greening."

"I am 21 and have been diagnosed with a hiatus hernia. I am thin, 125 pounds. I don't smoke, eat healthy and exercise daily. I have the same symptoms as many of you, pain under left ribcage, pain in ribs, nausea, diarrhea, pain in my back. When I lay down I can actually hear my stomach move into my chest. Sometimes when it is up my chest will "click" to my heartbeat. I have found no relief.
So my question is - is this it? Everywhere I have looked nobody has an answer. I have been to doctors who only prescribe antacids. I have been to Chiropractors that pull the stomach down but it just keeps sliding back up even when I'm standing. At this point I am starting to feel like I will have to live with this - If that is the case I will probably kill myself within ten years or so... I really can't live like this and I feel like I am out of options. To all of you who are suffering I feel for you -"

"Well Spencer, I have been living with mine for probably over 40 years now, and I am 75. I found out the same way you did, from my Chiropractor, and he showed me how to go up under the left rib cage and push the hernia back into the stomach. I use to be able to do that, but just can't get it to work any more. I have suffered all these years, but, I know what it is and almost always know what has caused it.
I use to be in the hospital at least every 6 weeks thinking I was having a heart attack. Turned out after I had been telling them 3 yrs it was a hernia my old Internal Dr. told me I was right. I have found mine is brought on mostly by stress (5 kids and lots of stress) which I no longer have, thank God, and most dairy products, mainly milk of any kind. The new Almond seems to cause less trouble, but I now only use it with cereal. Choose the one you like best and use only a small amount. No other dairy bothers me, I eat lots of cheese, butter and yogurt. I am having a flair up now, but I know I drank a half cup of milk a couple of times last week and it really got to me but took a few days.
I keep Zantac and WalMart brand antacids just for this bad time. Try not to take any of that stuff at normal times. I think the best treatment, or it is for me, is to go on a soft diet, soft boiled or poached eggs, boullion, jello and mashed,(I make Instant) potatoes. Usually if I eat only those items for about 3 or 4 days, it relaxes the hernia and all seems to go back in place.
I also have the pain in my back, but right behind the hernia which sometimes makes me think it's my kidney, but never had a kidney problem in all 75 years. I know how I use to worry about it and even now when I have a hard time breathing just walking around the house, much less trying to go shopping or anything else. Because I use to smoke, the Dr. automatically said I have COPD. Well I never thought that was right because the only time I had a hard time breathing, was when the hernia was pushed up against my lungs. Of course he or the cardioligist still don't believe that, but what do I care.
I was a Chiropractic assistant years ago, and I believe there are many things you can do to help heal yourself and not always take an MD's word or script for everything. Try the soft dies, know the surgery might help but it will come back, look at your lifestyle, stress and diet, and maybe you can make some changes for yourself. You're pretty young to be worrying so much about this, and it isn't helping your cause, as a matter of fact, it's making your stress level much higher, this isn't something that's going to kill you but may be with you for a long time. Good Luck to you and God Bless..."

"I have a hiatal hernia that seems to cause all kinds of symptoms of discomfort. Unfortunately for me it had gotten worse over past 10 years. I must admit I have maintained good eating habits. Over the past year it feels like a great pressure underneath my ribs, especially on the left side right under my breast. I want to eat but a few bites or sips of anything makes me feel bloated. After or while eating i get me such horrible pressure. I am better if I try to entend my body backwards as this takes pressure off my diaphragm. Difficulty taking a deep breath is another.
The creates anxiety and itsll becomes very circular. Horrible way to live. I get a burning ache between my shoulder blades. The chest pressure after eating also seems to push straight through to my spine. The constant bloating is unreal. I have tried previcid, nexium, aciphex....name it. To help with l the sense of fullness, my doctor gave me peppermint capsules to take before meals. I have had my colonoscopy, swallow studies, endoscopies, abdominal ultra sounds and chest x-rays. I feel utterly nuts! I am having HIDA Scan of my gallbladder in two days. I hope the doctor can tellme something. We all need a break and a better quality of life."

"I am on my iPhone so excuse the typos. I wanted to correct my posting. I HAVE NOT maintained good dietary habits but now I watch everything I eat. I would almost rather not eat because I know the horrible fullness will come. Also, a professional massage did give me some back relief."

See my gastroentogolist on 22nd of June, to figure out what's next, would like to avoid surgery, but symptoms get me down. "Hi to all, Ive had a 3cm hiatus hernia for 2 years now. For the first 9 months it was awfull, palpitations that scared me to death, stomach and esophagus spasm. Heartburn, breathing problems and really bad chest pain. II have managed to get mine under control and found the biggest problem was overnight reflux.
I didnt feel the pain during my sleep but the next day was awfull. I tried to elevate the bed which helps a little but i found that a swig of gaviscon advance before bed fixed all of my problems. I still take 20mg omeprazol in the morning and that swig of gaviscon gets me through the night. I have been symptom free for sometime now and can eat pretty much anything. Hope this helps"

"I have had a hiatus hernia for 7 years now, I am 22 years old. I have my pre op booked for next week, getting nervous as not really had any information on what to expect... I have had the weird hiccup thing, acid reflux, food coming back up, vomiting, chest pain, trouble swallowing, heart palpitations from pain and dizziness. Dizziness is also due to my labyrinths disease.
I was put on omeprazole, lansoprazole and antacids, all different strengths, I lost a job because I had too much time off sick, Doctors have been ignoring me and pushing me to meds that don't work, I stopped taking them about 2 years ago, I figured it's better not to pump my body full of chemicals that do nothing for me. A few months ago I opted for surgery, I went to my GP and insisted they get me referred, they sent me for another endoscope first, I had one when I was diagnosed after being rushed into hospital. The guy who did my endoscope messed up and didn't give me enough sedative so I am really really nervous about the surgery because of that, the pain for that was awful, then he tried again to get me back on meds, after returning to the doctor for results she also tried to put me back on meds, I told her no and I want the surgery, stick with it and keep going on, if you insist they cannot refuse.
My hernia is "only" 2-4cm, does not matter how big it is, I am home from work again because of the pain and sickness, it impedes my life, at 22 I can't even drink one alcoholic drink, eat much takeaway, no deep fried or fatty, I am grateful for the diet as I am trying to lose weight but the rest... far from appreciated. You have to really push them. I hope they give me more info on what will happen next week... scared and excited... nervous also. Keep you updated. Christine. xx"

"Hello, just noticed your-comment. I to seem to have the same type of hihatus hernia as you, I must have had it for at least 15 years, because that's how long I have been suffering with anemia,I don't have all the problems that lots of other people seem to be suffering with and the tablets take care of that, but starting 18 months ago I started vomiting blood and also the other way about every 4 weeks.
I had many tests but they couldn't find it until I had an attack and was rushed to hospital, they then found ulcers on the hernia,I think they are called cameron ulcers. I am worried about the operation as the heria is very large the doctors say,but what I was wandering is did you get to the point of vomiting blood? And if so did the medication stop it as I am now on my fourth week and waiting for the next one.and also how did your op go. The doctor said these only occur in 5 % of hihatus herna patients."

"Hi All, Just joined after reading all of your comments. Little bit about myself:
I was diagnosed with a 4cm sliding Hiatus Hernia roughly 4 years ago following an Endoscopy. The reason being, I had just turned 17 when I started to suffer from horrific Heart Burn. Despite Gaviscon, Ranitidine and Rennie, nothing seemed to relieve the pain bar the odd concoction of my Mum's favorite heartburn solution; 2 scoops of Bicarbonate of Soda with some water!
I'm now 21 and the past 4 years have been hard to put it lightly. I've been placed on more antacid medication I care to remember, from Omeprazole, Lansoprazole to Motility drugs like Domperidone and Metoclopramide. (There was a phase where nothing I ate stayed down for very long). After 4 Endoscopies, 3 Barium Meals and 4 ATTEMPTS at the Esophagus Manometry test, I was told that along with a small hernia, which apparently don't commonly cause allot of symptoms, I actually had a weakness in my Lower Oasophagul valve thus suffering with Acid Reflux and food regurgitation.
These of course were not the only symptoms I was suffering with. I also experienced allot of chest pain, esophagus spasms (which feel like a very heavy hiccup so to speak) and waking up every morning with a really sore and scratchy throat. I write today for some advice and reassurance. I have as of yesterday signed the consent form to go ahead with Surgery to repair my small hernia and hopefully create a valve via the Nissen Fundoplication procedure. I opted for Partial due to the fear of it being wrapped too tight.
My reasons for surgery are I am at my wits end with Heartburn and all the symptoms associated with GORD. I was also informed by my Consultant that following my most recent endoscopy, I have many small Benign Polyps in the lining of my stomach which are harmless and simply caused by my reliance on Proton Pump Inhibitors for 4 years. When I say harmless, I'm more than aware that my risk of stomach cancer has now increased also along with the constant scarring of my esophagus thus leading to Barrett's Esophagus.
I believe that 'Nipping it in the bud' at my ripe old age of 21 puts me in a slightly better position of recovery time etc than my peers. I’m currently on a waiting list in Arrowe Park Hospital (Merseyside) to have the procedure and would appreciate any comments regarding the procedure (hopefully positive!). Also anyone who relates a little to my particular situation as I can see many people on this thread mainly suffer with Large Hernias. Thanks in advance."

"Hi Laura! Wow, I can't believe how similar our situations are! I have been suffering with pains for almost 4 years now, since age 18. GERD.. Reflux, stomach pains, chest pains, sore throat, coughing, the weirdest belching sound which is almost constant and sounds like a dragon around my breast bone (I physically can not burp) constant vomiting, periods of constipation/ diorreah It massively affected my life throughout university and now it is comepletely crippling my life!
I have had to pass up on massive career opportunities because of my health and was hoping to travel to Australia in the early half of 2015 but I don't think it is realistic with my current health problems. After 4 years of a variety of NHS treatments (and part diagnoses) I have tried every antacid and GERD medication available, a 6 day stay in hospital, several trips to A+E been diagnosed coeliac, but then diagnosis changed 6 months later, MA, bronchitis, etc etc.. I was going to the GP, getting referred to the hospital, waiting 8 months for a referral, waiting 4 months for them to get the info back to my GP, waiting weeks to see my GP again and then being referred somewhere else!
Finally made the decision to go private about a month ago after an NHS doc suggested an Endescopy. I couldn't wait months for answers so booked in to Kingsbridge private hospital in Belfast. In the last month I have had my private consultation, a barium meal which revealed a small hiatus hernia and a weakening in the stomach valve (apparently mine does not close at all!) this was re-confirmed with an endescopy and I had a colonoscopy to confirm there was no bowel problems.
I had my evaluation appointment today with the private consultant who has recommended a dietician, a new form of antacid, a laxative to relieve pressure around my bowels to hopefully relieve some abdominal pain.. I broke into tears when he said this.. Although I have had a definite diagnosis which I am massively relieved about, it is exactly the same thing I have had tons of NHS docs tell me.. Meds meds and more meds! He polished it up with a diatician and said the only other option is surgery but he wouldn't advice because I am too young and there are a lot of complications.
I came on tonight to research the surgery and although the side effects some of you guys are facing seem awful I doubt it is worse than how I feel now. Honestly feel like I have nothing to loose! I have booked a review appointment for 3 months with the same consultant but now I am seriously considering ringing tomorrow to book another appointment and beg for this surgery.. I feel like I am 22 and my young adult life hasn't even started yet. I feel like an old woman and just can't wait any longer! Did you have your surgery in the end? How did the procedure/recovery go? And what are the differences in the surgery combined with the repair of the valve? Thanks Robyn"

"Hi Robin, I have had my gastroscopy and was diagnosed with a 2 cm hernia in the exact spot where my pain and discomfort originates. My stomach muscles have weakened because my stomach is trying to go through the hernia into my chest. Medications provide temporary relief but my doctor refuses to do the operation because the hernia isn't big enough to cause him concern. Though it causes me daily discomfort, how weird is that??
My bowel movements are completely screwed up, sometimes constipated for days at a time, other times diarrhoea. I'm going back next year when my medical aid savings are renewed but I surely cannot continue like this. I hope that you are feeling better and that your shakes have subsided, and also that your bowels settle down to normality. Did you also have to do the liquid diet, did you lose a lot of weight? My ex-boyfriend became a match stick sad Was hard to see him being hungry but unable to eat anything."

"Hi Karen, you are not alone. I have a 6cm sliding hernia which I have had for many years and have symptoms much like yours. Some days worse than others. I sometimes feel like I have been punched right where the solar plexus is. I also get sick and feel like I have something stuck in my throat.  Lansoprazole helps a little. I have learnt to live with it but it is not always easy. Hang in there and see what the CT scan reveals. Hopefully you will get some answers. It is surgery next for me but at the moment I really don't want to go that route"

"Hello Karen, I was diagnosed with Hiatal Hernia some 3 years ago. I have the same symptoms as you do in the last 3 years and I am still learning to manage. There are bouts of anxiety and panic at times and a little frustration. I have learned from the gastro that this is a natural reaction- he said that a physician he knows still panics at times. On really bad days, I have chest muscle pains. I take Dexilant 60 when symptoms are bad and just simply watch my diet closely. This forum reassures me that I am not alone and sometimes, having someone to converse with virtually helps allay some fears or mitigate the panic. Nevetheless, a professional advice from gastro or GP is still be th best option. Good luck"

"Hiya I had a 2cm hernia and suffered really bad for 8 years. I finally had the nissen fundoplication and had a 360 wrap and they repaired the hernia and it was the best thing I ever did. I did a lot of research before the op as I don't think it works for everyone. Lx"

"Hi I'm new to this site, just recently been diagnosed with a 4cm sliding hiatus hernia after suffering for 2 years with horrendous chest, neck, shoulder and back pain! been to A&E a least 5 times this year thinking I was having heart problems! had an endoscopy 4 weeks ago and was diagnosed! so now what? I was sent home with no advise whatsoever. been on all the PPI's for the last 15 years as I suffer with GERD and IBS! I feel bloated all the time, I burp, fart, feel sick and light headed and now I get a pulsating throb from my tummy through my chest into my throat cry If I eat the wrong thing it feels like I got a tennis ball stuck behind my sternum, really fed up with this now.
I won't go the operation route, it's not got a good success rate! so it's maintenance, put the head of my bed on two blocks 8inches high, given up gluten and dairy and all spicy foods eat 3 hours before I got to bed and have a swig of gaviscon as a night cap! I take a multi vitamin and magnesium supplements. the next step is stop smoking and drinking red wine rolleyes what else can I do? the omeprazole makes me feel crap, so I've gone back to ranitidine. any advise would seriously be welcomed........."

"Sorry I meant to say I'm 57 year old male carpenter, who now can't bend over or lift anything heavy!!"

"I have suffered with GORD and IBS for over 20 years. During my last Endoscopy (3 so far) as Heartburn was awful I was diagnosed with a Sliding Hiatal Hernia. Have been fine over last 2 years but last 6 weeks suffering with terrible heartburn and stabbing pains in middle of chest. Sometimes the pain is so sharp it takes my breathe away. Happen when am sitting down. Saw GP who said it was not heart reataed but the heartburn. Also suffering with back ache in shoulder blade mainly on left side and in middle of back. Is this the type of pain you also suffered from Eddie 10? The only time I don't have the pain is when having an alcoholic drink, think it numbs the nerve endings. Teresa"

"I to have been diagnosed with a hiatus hernia. I have all the same symptoms as you re light headed ness, feeling sick, shoulder pain, bloated ness to name but a few. It really gets me down on a day to day basis and I'm coming to the end of my tether! No matter which doctor or specialist I see it always ends up with them proscribing some sort of PPI medication. The only one that seems to have a very small effect is ranitidine but only a little. Have you quit smoking yet and has it helped. But quitting red wine? That's sacrilidge lol. I'm having a bad  time right at this very moment. Any advice would be very much appreciated."

"Hi Guys, I'm so happy to have found this site. I have always not had the best GI tract and have had some acid reflux. However, in the last week, I have had intolerable chest pain that radiates up towards my left shoulder, some pain in the left side of my neck, pain in my upper back and shortness of breath. I had an EKG yesterday because I thought I was having a heart attack and it scared me even more because I actually do have congenital heart conditions.
My EKG was just the same as my last one, nothing had changed, good news. But my doctor said I need to get an upper GI done because she's thinking I have a hiatal hernia. Besides the pain, everything I have been eating feels like it's coming back up. I realized recently that I just noticed a pattern that I feel like crap after every single time that I eat. I felt like I was dealing with things just fine until the intolerable pain recently. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance! Jen"

"Hi all im new to this! Eddie this conversation youve started is a revelation to me!! Been trawling round the internet trying to figure out what all my symptons could be attributed to and it seems i may be getting somewhere thanks to all the users posting their experiences on this!
I'm 33 year old male and was told 6 months ago i got a sliding HH, was given omeprazole which i didnt like they didnt agree with me, so ive kind of just ploughed along...not the best idea as like so many others ive been feeling like my hearts going to explode, getting shooting pains in my arms and back but the biggest problem is right on my chestbone area, its like theres a big blockage or obstruction permanently there and its like a 'crsuhing' feeling...would anybody else liken it to this?? unbearable at times i must say.
I would quite like to know if anybody suffers with fatigue and just feeling generally tired and unwell through this and not having much motivation etc????? i work out and usually fit and healthy (non smoker) but just seem not to last as long exercising and breathlessness is becoming more apparent along with the chest 'tightening' any advice form you guys/girls would be greatly appreciated."

"I too have 4 cm sliding HH..diagnosed with HH 13 yrs ago..it was a 3cm slide but having had gall bladder surgery..it increased to 4cm..pains in chest are like having a heart attack..hubby called out paramedics thinking I had actually had a heart attack..I was taken to hosp..kept in 3 days and given no tests whatsoever..dire!
..anyway I was told by a nurse last yr that I could have keyhole surgery..but after speaking to one of the surgical team it scared me rigid..so have put that on hold..never drink alcohol..but do smoke..(would love to stop but finding that hard) as I realise its making things worse..arghhh..chest pain worse around 5am..despite sleeping with raised pillows etc..find Omeprazole dont work..Gaviscon does a little..cant drink or eat hot stuff..have to let it go cool..awful thing to have isnt it."

"I've had my probs for about 10 years. My 2 cm hernia gives me constant non stop pain. I can only remember about a 1 1/2 month period without pain. I have the clamping in my chest , the pressure feeling like someone is standing on your chest, the pain, the neck and shoulderblade pain etc etc. I also have breathing probs because the hernia irritates my diaphram.
Acid reducers don't seem to work, I have the hernia and reflux ibs ( which seems to be the norm with this from the posts I have read ) general digestive probs. With me all of this crap hit me all at once about 10 years ago. The problem with operations on the hernia is I was told that it is a slim chance of making it off of the operating table alive and even if successful it would most likely be back within 5 years. Be very very careful about getting a operation dieing on the operating table is a 90% chance , I went to many dif docs and they all said the same thing risk wise and told me not to get it done.
These problems are genetic as my mother has the exact same thing. For her acid reducer medication works for me it doesn't do a damn thing. I use a table spoon of baking soda in a cup of water. tastes like crap but it works better then anything and is the fastest of anything. raising the head of my bed works well also. Raise it 6 inches. A Huge dif almost night and day.
With the hernia the muscle relaxes causing stomach acid to leak into your esophogus and lungs. This causes erosion and eventually lung disease as your stomache acid is hydrochloric acid. this can also cause erosion of the lining in your esophigus and if it erodes into the artery behing there you can bleed to death internally.
I also had bloating, sour stomache, excessive gas ( burping ) and what i call extreme hot flashes and or some sweating from it when the reflux acts up big time and my heart rate increases also .This isn't to scare anyone just to point out the serriousness of stomache acid problems. Raising the head of your bed stops the acid from leaving your stomache and leaking back into your esophogus and lungs. It is natural for the pressure feeling on your chest to make you feel/think as though you are dieing and is very common symptom. It did for me it's the psychological effect of it.
If you havent had a stomache scope I highly suggest you get one just to be sure of what it is. I found that gaviscon is complete crap for me not to mention a huge rip off price wise and doesn't really do anything medically. it supossidly creates a barrier where as baking soda and water is the only sure thing as it neutralizes the hydrochloric acid completely and turns it into water. Watching what you eat is also key. Through baking soda my probs have actually decreased 10 fold in severity.
I use to be awake for days from the pain and could only sleep from passing out from exhaustion , it was that bad. If you have hypertension talk to a doctor about using baking soda and fyi most antacids use baking soda but charge you a hell of a lot more then buying a big box for $1 or $1.50 that lasts months compared to a bottle of gaviscons that last a week and costs $14.00."

"i was diagnosed with hiatal hernia twenty yrs. ago, and yes i do go through episodes of shortness of breath after eating a meal, of course i cant eat a very big one because of hernia. i usually have to take an antacid pill before each meal to soothe it some, it helps. i am so tired of this thing, but dont want surgery but the shortness of breath is a horrible experience to have to deal with it scares me,wish there was a easy solution."

"I'm a 63 yr old male, and was diagnosed with a medium size Hiatal hernia last year, during an endoscopy, and have been feeling horrible for the last five months.I have a good day every so often but most days I'm miserable.
Does anyone else suffer from frequent nausea,a feeling of being slightly faint, chest pain that moves around from the center of the chest to the left and right side, stomach ache, extreme fatigue, and an overall weak feeling?Another strange thing is that all of a sudden I can feel good for ten minutes, then terrible again.
Most time however, just when I think I'm feeling better,it comes back to ruin another day.I think my family thinks I'm nuts. 12 years ago I had a heart attack, but fortunately had had very little heart damage. The cardiologist said I had a very rare type of tear in my coronary artery, and after a 2nd and 3rd angiogram it had healed perfectly, butI just can't help thinking though, that I,m having some new heart problems.
About every year and a half I have a nuclear stress test and they are always good,Now I've been going to my primary care doc,and he has no answer.First he said it might be anxiety,(I doubt it)so he put me on Zoloft. I've been on it for 3 months with no improvement, now he sent me for blood work to check all kinds of other things.I think he's just guessing at this point.
When I ask him if all this can be caused by a hiatal hernia,he says some of it can,but not the fatigue or faint feelings. He doesn't seem to be too concerned about the hiatal hernia scenario. All I know is that I'm fed up with being sick, and feeling like I can't make it through the day,and feeling like I'm going to fade out.I was never one to go to the doctor and other than the heart attack I was never sick. This sucks."

"I am reading these posts and all of the suffering. I am here because I have been having the shortness of breath, after eating feeling like my ribcage is going to explode and darting pain in my lower back, total discomfort and loss of appetite, restless nights and general fatigue. Honestly, I thought that it was my asthma condition. I finally described in detail what I was experiencing to my boyfriend, who is a chiropractor.
I laid down on the couch and he gently pushed in the area which is right above my stomach It was excruciating - so painful! He said, "You have a Hiatal Hernia. Relax, I can fix it." My daughter, who is 12, held my hand and he literally repositioned this section with 2 fingers forcing it to re-engage into its nautral position. Did it hurt? My daughter said it sounded like I was giving birth. YES! Immediately after he did this procedure I felt relief. The area feels bruised but let me tell you ... I am taking full painless breaths, the back pain is gone, I no longer feel like crap and I am so thankful to him. He did this procedure 2 hours ago and I keep burping (I was told to expect this). Also it is very important to drink warm, almost hot water immediately afterwards.
A lot of people do not think to go to a chiropractor for things like this. I wanted to share this with you in hopes of easing your suffering so you know that there is an alternative to surgery and medication. If you choose to go to a chiropractor with your hiatal hernia, be sure to ask if they have ever treated for this in other patients. From what I understand, not all chiros are trained in this field. I wish you health and wellness in your future days."

"I have been having a lot of the symptoms associated with hiatal hernia that people have been mentioning in this forum. Similar pain, similar symptoms, prescribed all the same stuff, and similar reactions to the medicine. I just came back from the barium exam (which I requested) and the doctor said there was nothing apparent, but he was going to exam them in more detail. Doesn't seem promising.
I have heard that people with hiatal hernias can go misdiagnosed...even endoscopys can miss them. My question is, has anyone here been misdiagnosed, only to find out later they had a hiatal hernia? I am so disappointed by this exam and was really hoping to get some answers because my pain seems to be getting worse."

"Today I have had the camera down my throat to be told I have a 3cm Hiatus Hernia, the nurse told me on my discharge I would be sent an appointment to basically go back to hospital drink some dye stuff then go for xrays, as any one else had this done, what does this tell them, I feel bloated or pregnant, I also feel pressure in my chest and breathless but I put that down to my asthma, and slight heartburn , the nurse told me to prop myself up in bed with pillows but I cant do that as I have a bad back, so have to suffer,"

"I am only 32 years old but have been having dull aches and radiating sensations in my left chest area. After a trip to the hospital and numerous trips to my doctor, numerous EKGs, nuclear stress test, bloodwork, CT scan, and holtor monitor I ruled out my heart.I basically diagnosed myself with a hiatal hernia from researching my symptoms online. After an endoscopy I was told I did have a small HH and some acid reflux.
This is ruining my life and I see absolutely no hope. I can find nothing positive about this condition as well as any treatment...and i'm not trying to be pessimistic. Seems like from all my research that I basically have been diagnosed with an ailment that is only going to lead to chronic illness in many forms with the only alternative being a lifetime of ridiculously overpriced meds which weaken your bones (among other symptoms) or a serious surgery with high risk, low success rates, and not being able to burp / vomit forever. not to mention the difficulty in finding a surgeon qualified to do the operation.
People think im blowing this out of proportion and exaggerating but this feels like a death sentence. I don't want to give up EVERY good food/drink there is, sleep on an inclined bed, take these meds, and live in fear of cancer forever.
My only hope is that a chiropractor actually works and can keep the stomach down, the diaphram and LES can heal but I can find no solid proof of any of this. can anyone with experience with chiropractic treatment of this please get back to me with specific information? thank you"

"I am having such awful symptoms and the shortness of breath is more than I care to endure. I was dx'd with a hiatal hernia in my 20s.(I remember during labor the pain of my stomach trying to push through my diaphragm was worse than the labor itself!)
I am now 60. I have been to the cardiologist and had a complete work up with a series of test...all fine. Just went to the Pulmonary Dr and have some asthma. BUT this is not just asthma...and much worse after eating.
MY QUESTION for those having had the surgery is that I understand afterwards you can never vomit again or burp. That worries me because I have had food poisoning 4x in my life and can't imagine what would happen if I couldn't expel those toxins. I travel all over the planet for my job."

"For the past two years I haven't felt like myself. I don't enjoy life like I used to. I am 32 years old and have the following symptoms: shortness of breath, when I try to breath deep I can't. I also feel the need to yawn but nothing happens. I have chest pain and tightness in the center of my chest. I feel very tired an fatigued almost all the time. After I eat I immediately feel short of breath, bloated, woozy feeling and have to burp and pass gas for about an hour after eating.
I sometimes feel a tingling sensation throughouty body. After reading about hiatel hernia it sounds like a good possibility. Only other issue is my vision comes and goes, is this also related or has anyone had this symptom with hernia? I have been to hospital several times and had all the tests and been on several medications or GERD and given Xanax for anxiety. Whatever is going on is really affecting my life. All I want to do is sit and lay around as I am scared for what I call a "flare up". I have good days and bad with the symptoms but Id say more bad days.
If anyone has any info or experience on what I have mentioned, especially the vision problem please EMAIL me as I don't check this site on a regular basis. Any help, suggestions or concerns will be greatly appreciated as I am tired of feeling like this and limiting my daily life. Email is jonboy3080@gmail.com THANK YOU"

"I think my HH is genetic, and my whole life I had light symptoms but in sept it finally started to bother me, I'm 32. A few days ago I had an endoscopy and it was discovered. For the past two years I was exercising 5 days a week, lost a lot of weight and this drops on me, along with acid reflux. I just ask why because I'm miserable most of the time.
When my family goes out to eat I rarely go because I'm worried about a flare up, and the ppi's leave me tired and zap my energy. I get short of breath, nausea, chest tightness, etc and I'm sick of it, I want my life back!!! I feel for anyone going through this, I've only been suffering for a few months and I can't imagine the people that have had this for years"

"Update. During my endoscopy my doctor took a biopsy of my throat. It took a few weeks but he called me back and said I had a throat infection and gave me some meds. I asked about the hiatal hernia and they said not much can be done about it, and he said it doesn't effect exercise and I should be able to eat anything I want. I don't know, something is causing my breath shortness, I take BP meds so maybe I need to switch up because one if the side effects I heard is indigestion. We'll see"

"I had a CT scan and was diagnosed with a very large hiata hernia a few years ago. It's never bothered me until the last year. I don't suffer from heartburn, but I have shortness of breath allot, some pain in my chest and left shoulder. I only suffer from pain if i eat too much, this also varies. I cannot burp. In the last year i've had 2 bouts where i have to do a liquid diet as nothing will go down. As well as a general feeling of unwellness. These can be very dangerious. If your sure you have one tell the doctor you want a CT scan. You will know for sure."

"I have had hiatal hernia problems for years, it was getting so bad, I couldn't catch my breath , after the slightest bet of exertion. Walking , going up and down stairs, even normal housework. i had a horrible wheeze , and gurgling sounds. My family commented on how loud it was. I also felt like I swallowed a basket ball , after each meal. I visited may doctors, including pulmany , heart specialist, and my gastroenterologist .
After a upper Gi scoping , it was discovered My entlire stomach had slipped through the hialtal, and was resting on my esophagus, and lower left lung lobe. I had no choice but to get surgery. Which I did have in July, 2012. i must say first, that i can breath well now, and can walk for miles with no problems.(even for this 80 year old lady) But there has been many side effects. I'm afraid t eat sometimes., and have to keep meals small and more often. Terrible gas, cramping, on and off bowel problems, and soreness where the repair was done. Also a pain in my left shoulder, when I do eat.
I suppose a nerve is being effected. My life is not the same , but i was told, "i must live with it" I do feel, I could not have gone on with the way it was before. And breathing seems to be more important than eating very much :-) i never had acid reflex before, but i do now. Especially in bed at night. I tried buying a wedge pillow, and it was horrible. Like sleeping on a tombstone. I wake up quite often and take a few sips of water or some gas relief meds. I suppose one must just go with the flow. The surgery is a trade off. i can burp, and that means the surgery was a success. Has anyone else gone through a paraesohgageal herrnia , with fundoplication? What are your thoughts, and how are you coping?"

"I was diagnosed in 2012 with a hiatal hernia after exteme bloating shortness of breath and chest pain. At first I thought it was a heat problem and had a stress test and a heart cath done and it was fine. I then went to see a Gastroenterologist and told him my symptoms and also told him I have had H-pylori recurring for years. Anyway got diagnosed with the hh but 3 days later after I had been suffering with it for maybe 3 weeks all symptoms disappeared. They reoccur every once in a while but recently about a week ago they came back but worse than before.
The chest pains are constant and the shortness of breath as well. They came out of nowhere! I was concerned it was something else because I recently had ankle surgery and also was on a 16 hour car trip so the doctors wanted to make sure it was not a pulmonary embolism, but all my tests came back normal, but I still have chest pain and shortness of breath and intemittent bloating. I am at a loss. Can this too be that damn hiatal hernia?"

"I'm very glad I found this thread. Went to hospital with difficulty breathing, difficulty swallowing, sensation of having something in my throat. Followed by anxiety and panic attacks. Soon turned into OCD. Expressedmto doc that i felt my diaphram was constricting my breathing. Hospital told me nothing in me belly should be putting pressure on my diaphragm.
I requested a endoscope anyway and was discovered to have a hiatal hernia. Brochure gastro doc gave me said a complicated hernia can cause shortness of breath and difficulty swallowing food. Stated surgery is usually done on a complicated hernia.has anybody tried any more natural remedies that worked. Need to know. Stealing my life."

"My problem started with shortness of breath while sitting and talking. I was referred to a gi and since January of this year have been through a battery of test. 2 endoscopies , 1colonoscopy, stomach emptying test, swallowing test(cannot remember the name) blood work, barium swallow, ent referral (who said the irritation in my throat is consistent with lpr. Everything seems to come out fine. They have found a hiatal hernia, about 3cm, but say it shouldn't be causing these problems.
I have multiple symptoms on different days, but the worst is not being able to take deep breaths. This happens 24/7. Sitting in my car trying to talk throws me into a panic attack, I get extremely breathless. Bending over seems to cause me the most discomfort. But I have only been able to take deep breaths from my diaphragm a total of 2 times this year. This has greatly affected my quality of life. I am in fear of losing my job :(. HAS ANYONE ELSE EXPERIENCED THIS SENSATION IN THEIR DIAPHRAGM, bloating and tension in the solar plexus area. I see my gi doc tomorrow and I don't think I can handle the head shaking and him telling me on paper I am perfectly healthy."

"Patty If you don't mind me asking what were you symptoms, and how did you finally get a diagnosis? I know a lot of people refer to shortness of breath that resembles asthma , mine is more pressure in my abdomen, like my diaphragm isn't working correctly. More recently I have developed a constant pain in my lower back and sides. Every single doctor I have been to has told me anxiety, my pulmonologist even told me 70% of my issues were anxiety related. Pretty difficult not to get excited about difficulty breathing :("

"I am 75-year-old female and three weeks ago had hiatal surgery. Feeling great, but getting pretty bored with eating soft foods, which I will need to do so for three more weeks. I had a slow internal bleed due to the hiatal hernia, which caused me to be extremely anemic. It has taken many years for the hernia to become large enough (4.5 inches) with my stomach protruding into my chest area the size of a grapefruit.
I did not have GERD as the doctors think my was caused by heavy coughing due to uncontrolled asthma. My asthma is now under control and the surgery was scheduled. I had shortness of breathe prior to the surgery as the part of my stomach that had moved up into my chest was pressing on my descending aorta and also my lungs. Except for some shoulder and back pain, which is now gone, I had no other pain.
In fact, I needed no pain medicine after the surgery. I was told to be sure to have a doctor with many years of experience to do my surgery and was lucky enough to have one with 30 years experience. My breathing is 100% better and my uneven heart rate is now regular. Very easy surgery and went home from the hospital after two days. I am told I should have no more problems with anemia now as the slow bleed is over due to my hernia being repaired. Good luck to all of you. I am so thankful for good doctors, nurses and hospitals."

"I am curious as to how you are now doing. I am 6 weeks from having a wrap done which was supposed to have been a laparascopic procedure, but after 3hrs in the OR it had to be done by way of an incision. Not only did the hiatal hernia cause shortness of breath, reflux and Barrett's Esophagus but also seems to have been the major cause of my asthma. I am about to go off of the steroids completely and, so far, have only slight indications of any asthma which go away rather than getting worse."

"Possibly, if the coughing is related to asthma. I have had chronic asthma for almost 5 years (I am 67) with continuous bouts of wheezing, shortness of breath, coughing and congestion. Tried to blame it on allergies (they are under control) and sinus infection (my sinuses are now clear) and could only get relief by using a regimen of prednisone. Found that the hiatal hernia causes reflux which will irritate the breathing passages which produce heavier mucous than usual which clogs up the small air passages of the lungs, causing asthma. Six weeks ago I had a hiatal wrap ( can be done by laparascopy or standard surgery) and, although it is still too premature to judge, my asthma symptoms have decreased dramatically."

"It has been over a year now since I had my hiatal hernia operation. It was successful in that I do not appear to have any reflux problem. However, it was not the answer to my asthma problem (even though I had no asthma during the six weeks of recovery from the operation) and I still suffer from gas and bloating that can cause me to be quite short of breath. I believe a big factor of many of these ailments (plus the knees) is being overweight. That is my next step: to lose enough to feel better."

"Hi everyone. I am SO glad that I found this discussion board. I need some questions answered, and if any of you can help, I would greatly appreciate it. I have had a hiatal hernia for about 8 years now & I have taken Nexium every since the day that I was diagnosed (8 years ago). I finally got diagnosed after I was experiencing horrible acid reflux & went through many tests, including scopes & barium xrays.
The Nexium worked for the first few years to control my acid reflux, but I have always experienced nausea & constipation off and on, depending on what I eat, you know? I just figured this was something I had to deal with. I am a very healthy eater -no greasy foods. I eat 4-6 small meals daily. I go for a checkup with my gastroenterologist every year. I always discussed my symptoms & he would basically tell me that I should try to live with the symptoms & if they get worse, to let him know. I feel as though over the last couple years, my symptoms are getting MUCH worse.
I experience upper back pain, upper abdominal pressure (it feels as though someone is standing on my upper abdomen), my acid reflux is worse even when I take my nexium daily and the worst symptom of all is my breathing. I cannot breath normally, and this is hard for someone who is very active like me (I perform in triathalons regularly). I feel like I have shallow breathing & when I try to catch a solid, deep breath, I usually can't. I feel as though every couple minutes I try to breath deeply & it gets cut off. I have to basically sit up really straight & raise my shoulders up to breath in deep, and sometimes I get a satisfying breath, but usually not.
I went for a checkup with my gasteroenterologist yesterday, for the first time in 2 years & told him of all my symptoms. He told me that he would put me on a new medication, and if my symptoms do not improve, I could have hiatal hernia repair surgery. He gave me Dexilant. I took it this morning & my symptoms feel even worse today. My question is this -could my hernia have grown larger over the years & is causing new symptoms? Has anyone had breathing problems b/c of their hiatal hernia? And, did the surgery help with the breathing problems? I'm a little hesitant to have the surgery b/c of all of the horror stories I have heard, but then again, I want to give it a try b/c I am miserable! I can't breathe!"

I have had hiatal hernia repair surgery four weeks ago; before that I was a mess, had shortness of breath, acid reflux and extreme heart burn. I could not sleep, was always tired and had high blood pressure. Now with the repair, I am so much better except that I get a dull strong pain on my chest almost every day. I cannot eat a full meal (soft food) and always so much gas, something I didn't have before. Overall I am 80 percent better. Thanks to the doctors who decided to fix it because I could tell I was going down the drain with my health condition.

"I'm in Australia and had laparoscopic surgery for two hiatal hernias 2 weeks ago. The top half of my stomach was trapped in my chest cavity, causing much vomiting and chest pain. I went to emergency 3 times, the first time, they immediately found gallstones so I had the surgery. No better with the pain and vomiting. I had a barium meal x-ray which showed how serious the hernia was and I had the surgery.
Now, 2 weeks later, not a sign of nausea, I am getting stronger every day, and sticking to my pureed diet which gives things time to heal.I am very pleased so far, and realize I will have to change my lifestyle. Smaller meals, and no heavy lifting. I find I get a little indigestion if I eat too much now. Someone mentioned pain in the left shoulder after the surgery. Mine was excruciating, and it is referred pain from trapped gas in the chest cavity from the surgery. It goes away. Best luck to everyone, sometimes the surgery is the only option."

"I was diagnosed with a hiatal hernia after an endoscopy. I have horrible GERD and chest pain. Also every time I eat I get short of breath and my stomach and chest hurts. It is getting to the point that it is unbearable."

"I was diagnosed with a hiatal hernia after an endoscopy. I have unbelievable chest pain with GERD. I do not like going to bed when I eat. I do not eat chocolate, ice cream, and citrus food, still have chest pain every time. I took chest x-ray and echo and it is fine. The doctor said it is a small hiatal hernia so he won't do surgery, so I want to die."

"I had absolutely no heartburn with my hiatal hernia. I had chest pain, shortness of breath, vomiting up food (but no acid or bile with it), nausea after I ate, and pain at the edge of my ribcage on the right side. The first doctor said it was stress. It just kept getting worse, and a friend thought I was having a heart attack.
The second doctor I went to ran tests and found the sliding hiatal hernia and severe acid reflux disease. We are treating with Nexium and small (one-fourth to one-half cup size) meals for now. A weight loss regimen is to follow as soon as I heal enough to be off this bland diet. My doctor says while surgery is an option, he is against it and claims it doesn't hold well. I would just have it back again and again."

"I was diagnosed with a hiatal hernia some years ago. Lately, it has been getting worse and more noticeable. I feel horrid pressure on my chest and food seems "stuck" sometimes. I have gas, bloating, and belching. Often I am sure I am having a heart attack, but after taking Tums, 7 Up and Gas-X, I burp and feel better. I take Dexilant, but I hate it. If I eat anything "heavy," I know I will be up all night. It sucks."

"I've had a hiatal hernia (among other injuries) since I was a circus aerialist several years ago. It took nearly seven years to properly diagnose my condition; most doctors aren't familiar with it and kept sending me to cardiac care because of my chest pains. Eventually they figured it out, and I was given surgery (Nissan fundoplication). For about a year, things were fine, and then the sutures inside me disintegrated (according to a later endoscopy) and left me worse off than I'd been before.
Dealing with a hiatal hernia has been a full-time job for both my wife and I. I've gotten very good results from a chiropractor who does a stomach massage that puts things back in place now and then. However, medical doctors have been mainly useless in my treatment, other than providing me with proton pump inhibitors that cause as many problems as they solve. Most of the time I feel fairly lousy; at best I feel a little less than that.
I was a professional athlete when younger, but now I am unable to perform any but the most simple of exercises (walking is as much as I can handle). My experience with doctors throughout has been that they don't understand hiatal hernias overall, and don't care to deal with patients that they can't easily treat."

"I believe I've suffered with this for a very long time. I'm only 33 but since I was 14 I struggled with the heartburn and reflux and the food getting stuck. Also a lot of chest and abdominal pain. I honestly didn't think it was a hernia really didn't think to much about it except that I had bad heartburn an reflux.

I recently had Lapband surgery and the dr found a hernia an got rid of it. He said it was pretty big an thought I most likely had it for years. It's only been 2 weeks since surgery but I can tell a huge difference. I'm so happy he found it and took care of it. I read a lot of these posts and I just can't believe so many ppl have to suffer from this and their drs aren't doin surgery."
